Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode
The rear pistons are motor driven and have to be retracted electronically. Wound back by hand the motor is what fails, and it is the expensive part of that corner by a wide margin.

A triggered sensor is a one-time part. It is replaced with the pads so the warning means something on the new set instead of staying lit.

Disc Minimum Thickness
Measured against the stamped minimum and checked for run-out, so whether the discs need replacing is a number you decide on rather than an opinion you are handed.

Caliper Slider Seizure
Heat and dust dry out the slider grease. A caliper that does not release wears one pad away in weeks and cooks the disc with it, and servicing the hardware is what prevents it.

Warning signs
When a Seat Needs Brake Work
Brakes are the one system where waiting to see how it develops is not an option.
Squealing
Often the wear indicator doing exactly its job. Occasionally hardware or glazing, which is why it is looked at rather than assumed.
Grinding
Metal against metal. The pad material is gone and the disc is going with it, and the longer it runs the more of the job becomes discs.
Vibration Under Braking
Felt through the pedal or the wheel, usually disc run-out or uneven pad deposits, and most obvious from higher speed.
Longer Stopping Distance
The car takes more road than it used to. Glazed pads, tired fluid or a caliper not applying evenly.
A Soft or Sinking Pedal
Air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak somewhere in the system. This one is a same-day job rather than a next-service job.
Pulling to One Side
A caliper that is not applying or releasing evenly, and it will wear one side out while it does it.
Brake Warning Light
Level, wear sensor or the ABS and stability system. All three are readable, and one of them is a leak.
A Parking Brake Fault
On an electronic parking brake this is a motor, a cable or a control fault, and it usually appears right after a brake job done without the service mode.

Why does the rear brake job cost more than the front?
Because an electronic parking brake has to be put into service mode and reset with a diagnostic tool. It is a few minutes of equipment time that protects a part costing many times the pads.
How long do brakes last on these cars here?
Less than the manufacturer's figure, which was written for cooler traffic and lighter use. That is why they are measured at every service and quoted on the reading rather than on a schedule.
Do discs have to be replaced with the pads?
Only if they are below minimum thickness, badly lipped or distorted. They are measured and you are given the reading and the minimum, so it is your decision made on numbers rather than on someone's word.
How long do brakes last in Abu Dhabi?
Less than a manufacturer's figure written for cooler traffic. Heat, weight and stop-start driving are what wear brakes, and all three are worse here, which is why they are measured at every service.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
