What it covers

What a Land Rover A/C Repair Covers

An air conditioning system is sealed. If it needs gas, it has a leak, and refilling it without finding where is a repair with a date on it.

  • 01Performance Test and Pressure Reading
  • 02Leak Detection
  • 03Compressor Repair and Replacement
  • 04Condenser Replacement
  • 05Evaporator and Expansion Valve
  • 06Receiver Drier or Accumulator
  • 07Blower, Resistor and Airflow

Open the full list below for everything a Land Rover air conditioning repair covers, and what each part of it involves.

01

Performance Test and Pressure Reading

Vent temperature and high and low side pressures are measured with the system running and compared against what the car should produce at the ambient temperature outside, which in July is a very different target from January.

02

Leak Detection

Nitrogen pressure, ultraviolet dye or an electronic detector depending on where the loss is. The point is to find the leak, not to book you in for another regas in six months.

03

Compressor Repair and Replacement

Engagement, control valve operation, bearing noise and oil condition are tested before a compressor is condemned, because a control fault and a failed compressor feel identical from the driver's seat.

04

Condenser Replacement

The condenser sits at the front and takes stone damage, dust and corrosion. It is the most common single reason a system needs gas again a year later.

05

Evaporator and Expansion Valve

A leak behind the dash is the expensive one and it is diagnosed properly before the dash comes out. Expansion valve faults produce icing and cooling that fades, which look like low gas and are not.

06

Receiver Drier or Accumulator

Renewed whenever the system has been open, because it holds the desiccant that keeps moisture out, and moisture in a refrigerant circuit turns acidic and attacks the compressor.

07

Blower, Resistor and Airflow

Cold air that never arrives is as often airflow as refrigerant. Blower motor, its control module, the ducting and the cabin filter are checked as a path.

08

Climate Control Diagnosis

Blend and recirculation actuators, temperature sensors and the control module are read for what they are commanding rather than judged by how the vents feel.

09

Evacuate, Vacuum and Recharge

The system is evacuated, held under deep vacuum to prove it is sealed and to boil off moisture, then charged by weight with the correct refrigerant and the correct compressor oil.

10

Odour Treatment and Cabin Filter

A smell when the fan starts is microbial growth on a damp evaporator. It is cleaned and treated and the filter replaced, rather than covered with a fragrance.

What we see on these cars

Known Land Rover A/C Faults We See

An air conditioning system is sealed, so a system that needs gas has a fault. These are the ones it usually is.

  • 01

    Front and Rear Climate Circuits

Where the car has rear climate, the rear evaporator and its lines are tested too. A leak back there cools the whole car badly and is very easily missed.

  • 02

    Blend Motors and Control Faults

One side warm and one side cold is rarely gas. It is usually a blend motor or a flap, and it is found by reading what the climate module is actually commanding.

  • 03

    Condenser and Cooling Pack

The condenser sits in a stack with the coolers behind it and fills with dust. Cleaning the pack restores cooling at a standstill more often than a regas does.

  • 04

    Compressor Control

A regulated compressor with a control fault gives weak cooling on a full system, which is the single most common wrong diagnosis on these cars.

  • 05

    Blocked Evaporator Drains

A wet footwell on one of these is a blocked drain, and left alone it soaks carpet, underlay and whatever electronics live under the seat.

How it works

How a Land Rover A/C Repair Runs

Test, find the leak, quote, repair, recharge by weight, prove the temperature.

  1. 01

    Test and Measure

Vent temperature, system pressures and a climate control scan, so the starting point is a set of numbers rather than a description.

  2. 02

    Find the Leak

Nitrogen, dye or an electronic detector until the loss is located. Nothing is charged before this.

  3. 03

    Repair and Replace

The failed component replaced, the drier renewed because the system has been open, and the circuit cleaned where it needs it.

  4. 04

    Vacuum, Charge and Prove

Deep vacuum held to prove the seal, charged by weight, and the vent temperature measured again before the car goes back.

Why owners pick us

What You Get Back

What you drive away with after a Land Rover air conditioning repair, beyond the invoice.

  • Cold Air in Traffic

Not just cold when the car is moving. Cooling at a standstill in August is the real test and it is what the work is measured against.

  • A Repair Rather Than a Refill

Finding the leak is what stops you paying for gas twice, and it is the difference between a repair and an appointment to do it again.

  • The Correct Charge Weight

Charged by weight to the manufacturer's figure. Both too little and too much make a system cool badly, and guessing produces one or the other.

  • A Compressor That Survives

The drier renewed and moisture removed, which is what keeps acid out of the circuit and the compressor out of the bin.

  • Clean Air in the Cabin

Evaporator treated and the cabin filter replaced, so the smell when the fan starts is gone rather than perfumed over.

  • Electronics Diagnosed

Blend actuators and control faults read properly, which is what fixes a car that is cold on one side and warm on the other.

Warning signs

When a Land Rover Needs A/C Work

In this climate air conditioning is not a comfort feature, and a system struggling in March will fail in July.

  • Cooling Weakly

Cool rather than cold is the usual first sign of a slow leak, and the cheapest point at which to deal with it.

  • Cold Then Warm

Cooling that fades after a few minutes, which is usually icing at the evaporator or a control fault rather than low gas.

  • Cold Moving, Warm at a Standstill

Airflow across the condenser. At speed the car does the work, stationary the fan has to, so it is the fan, a blocked cooling pack or pressures climbing.

  • It Was Regassed Recently

A system that needed gas last year and needs it again has a leak. It is sealed, so the gas went somewhere.

  • Poor Airflow From the Vents

The air is cold but there is not enough of it, which is the blower, its control module or a cabin filter that has been in far too long.

  • Noise When the A/C Engages

A rattle or a squeal as the compressor comes in is the clutch, the pulley bearing or the compressor itself, and it gets louder and dearer from there.

  • A Smell From the Vents

Microbial growth on a damp evaporator, worst on the first start of the day and worst after a long spell of short trips.

  • Water Inside the Car

A wet passenger footwell is usually a blocked evaporator drain, and left alone it soaks carpet, underlay and whatever electronics live under the seat.

Questions

Land Rover A/C Repair questions, answered

What Land Rover owners ask before booking a air conditioning repair in. If yours is not here, call the workshop and ask.

One side of the car is cold and the other is not. Is the gas low?

Almost never. Different temperatures on the two sides means the air is being blended differently, which points at a flap motor or the control rather than at the refrigerant.

The back of the car never gets cold. Why?

On a car with rear climate there is a second evaporator and a second set of lines. They leak and block independently of the front, so the rear circuit is tested as its own system.

Can you just regas it?

We can, and if it has lost gas there is a leak, so a regas alone has a date on it. The system is tested first so you know whether you are buying a repair or a postponement.

How long does an A/C repair take?

A leak test and recharge is usually the same day. A condenser or a compressor depends on parts. An evaporator means the dashboard comes out and it is quoted as the day's work it actually is.

Why does the drier have to be replaced?

It holds the desiccant that keeps moisture out of the refrigerant circuit. Once the system has been opened, that desiccant is saturated, and moisture left in the system turns acidic and attacks the compressor.

Should the air conditioning be serviced before summer?

Yes, and before rather than during. Every system loses a little gas a year even with no fault, and finding a weak system in March is a repair. Finding it in July is a repair and a fortnight of misery.
