What it covers

What a Audi Gearbox Repair Covers

Gearboxes are expensive to guess at. The work starts with what the transmission itself reports, then with fluid, and only then with the box.

  • 01Transmission Fault and Adaptation Data
  • 02Fluid Condition and Level Check
  • 03Road Test Under Load
  • 04Mechatronic and Valve Body Work
  • 05Clutch Pack and Dual Clutch Work
  • 06Torque Converter Diagnosis
  • 07Fluid, Filter and Pan Service

Open the full list below for everything a Audi gearbox repair covers, and what each part of it involves.

01

Transmission Fault and Adaptation Data

Modern boxes log clutch fill times, slip, line pressure and temperature. Those values say whether the box is worn, whether it has adapted around a fault, or whether the problem sits outside it entirely.

02

Fluid Condition and Level Check

Burnt or low fluid causes most of the symptoms owners bring in. Level is set at the manufacturer's fluid temperature, because at any other temperature the reading means nothing.

03

Road Test Under Load

Shift quality is judged warm, on the road, through the range the fault appears in, with live data recording alongside. A gearbox that behaves in the workshop tells you nothing.

04

Mechatronic and Valve Body Work

A great many faults that feel like a failing gearbox are hydraulic or electrical control. Solenoids, pressure regulators, sleeves and wiring are repaired without opening the gear set.

05

Clutch Pack and Dual Clutch Work

Judder from rest and slip under load are measured against clutch wear data rather than assumed. On a dual clutch that data is the difference between an adaptation and a clutch.

06

Torque Converter Diagnosis

Shudder at light throttle at cruising speed is usually lock-up clutch material rather than the gearbox, and it is tested for as its own fault.

07

Fluid, Filter and Pan Service

Correct fluid, new filter, pan and magnets cleaned, sealed and filled to the temperature specification. Done properly it is one of the cheapest things you can do for a gearbox.

08

Overhaul and Rebuild

Where the box comes out it is stripped, measured and rebuilt with new clutches, seals, bearings and bushes to specification, then bench tested before it goes back in.

09

Transfer Case and Differential Work

On four-wheel drive cars a bind or a whine is as likely to be the transfer case, a coupling or a differential as the gearbox, and all three are checked with it.

10

Adaptation Reset and Relearn

After any transmission work the adaptations are reset and driven in, so shift quality settles where the manufacturer intended instead of around the fault that has just been fixed.

What we see on these cars

Known Audi Gearbox Faults We See

A gearbox is expensive to guess at. These are the faults worth ruling in or out before anybody talks about a rebuild.

  • 01

    Dry Clutch Mechatronic Faults

The seven speed dry clutch box is known for mechatronic trouble: jerky shifting, a refusal to select and limp mode. It is a different job from a clutch and a very different price, and the data says which one you have.

  • 02

    Wet Clutch Fluid and Filter

The wet clutch boxes need fluid and filter on schedule. Skipped, the clutch packs and the mechatronic pay for it, and in this heat the interval wants shortening rather than stretching.

  • 03

Clutch Pack Wear on the Longitudinal Boxes

The seven speed in the longitudinal cars wears its clutch pack and its mechatronic. Judder from rest is read against clutch adaptation values rather than assumed to be wear.

  • 04

    All-Wheel Drive Coupling Service

The rear coupling on transverse four-wheel drive cars has its own pump, filter and oil service. Neglected, it produces a bind that gets blamed on the gearbox in front of it.

  • 05

    Adaptations Left In Place

These boxes learn around wear. If the adaptations are not reset after a repair, the box keeps compensating for a fault that is no longer there and the shift quality never comes back.

How it works

How Audi Gearbox Work Runs

Read, test, quote, repair, relearn.

  1. 01

    Read and Road Test

Fault memory, adaptation values and a road test under load, so the symptom is matched to data rather than to an opinion.

  2. 02

    Written Quote

The findings and the options: control repair, fluid service, clutch work or rebuild, each priced, before anything is removed.

  3. 03

    The Repair

Carried out to specification with the correct fluid and the correct fill procedure, which on most modern boxes matters as much as the parts.

  4. 04

    Relearn and Road Test

Adaptations reset and driven in, then a second road test through the range that showed the fault.

Why owners pick us

What You Get Back

What you drive away with after a Audi gearbox repair, beyond the invoice.

  • Clean Shifts

Gears that arrive when they should and without the thump, because the cause was found rather than the symptom adapted around.

  • No More Limp Mode

The fault that made the transmission protect itself is gone, so the car stops dropping into third on the motorway.

  • The Cheaper Repair First

Control, fluid and clutch faults are told apart from wear before anything is quoted, which is what stops a mechatronic fault being sold as a gearbox.

  • Correct Fluid, Correct Level

The specification the box was designed around, filled at the right temperature. Most gearbox trouble that comes back is a fill that was close enough.

  • Adaptations Reset

The box relearns from a clean start rather than carrying the settings it built up while the fault was there.

  • A Written Record

The data before, the work done and the data after, so the next person to look at the car is not starting from nothing.

Warning signs

When a Audi Gearbox Needs Attention

A gearbox gives plenty of warning. What it does not give is a second chance once it has run low on fluid.

  • Hesitation Between Gears

A shift that takes a moment to arrive, most noticeable pulling away or on a light throttle upshift.

  • A Thump or Flare on Changes

The shift arrives all at once, or the revs rise between gears. Both are clutch or pressure faults and both get worse.

  • Slipping Under Acceleration

Revs rise and the car does not follow. That is clutch material going, and every kilometre driven on it destroys more of what is left.

  • Juddering at Light Throttle

A vibration at steady cruising speed, usually the torque converter lock-up clutch, and far cheaper to deal with early.

  • Noise in Neutral or on Turns

A whine that changes with road speed rather than engine speed points at bearings, the transfer case or a differential.

  • Limp Mode or a Warning Light

The transmission has logged something serious enough to protect itself. It should be read before the car is driven further.

  • Reluctance to Engage

A pause before drive or reverse takes up, worst when cold, which is usually pressure rather than the gear set.

  • Burnt Smell or Dark Fluid

Fluid that smells burnt has been overheated, and overheated fluid stops protecting the clutches it is carrying.

Questions

Audi Transmission Repair questions, answered

What Audi owners ask before booking a gearbox repair in. If yours is not here, call the workshop and ask.

My dual clutch judders pulling away. Is it finished?

Not necessarily. Judder from rest is often clutch adaptation or a mechatronic fault, both readable and both repairable. Replacing a gearbox on a symptom alone is how people overpay on these cars.

Does the dual clutch gearbox need a fluid service?

The wet clutch versions do, on a schedule, and in this climate we would shorten it. The dry clutch versions have their own service needs, and the two are not interchangeable.

Is transmission fluid really a lifetime fill?

It is described that way and it is not how these boxes behave in this climate. Heat is what ages the fluid, and a service with the correct fluid and a properly set level is one of the cheapest things you can do for a gearbox that is still healthy.

Can a slipping gearbox be repaired without a rebuild?

Sometimes. Slip caused by pressure, a solenoid or a control fault is repaired without opening the gear set. Slip caused by clutch material that has gone is not. The data says which before the box comes out.

What is a mechatronic unit?

The valve body and its electronics together: the part that decides and delivers every gear change. A great deal of what feels like a failing gearbox is a fault in it, and it is a very different job from a rebuild.

Why do adaptations need resetting after a repair?

A gearbox learns around wear and around faults. If the old settings are left in place after a repair, the box keeps compensating for a problem that is no longer there, and the shift quality never comes back properly.
